Spain star Lamine Yamal’s girlfriend, Spanish content creator Ines Garcia, has issued an emotional public statement after a wave of online abuse and speculation about the couple’s relationship exploded on social media following the country’s 2026 World Cup triumph.
Videos and photos from Spain’s official celebrations in Madrid went viral on X (formerly Twitter), appearing to show the Barcelona teenager paying little attention to Garcia during the title festivities. The clips prompted thousands of comments suggesting the pair were on the verge of breaking up, with many users directing insults and hate messages at Garcia.
Garcia, who lives in Seville and has been in an official relationship with Yamal for more than three months, said the nature of their bond stretched back further than the public realised, writing: “علاقتنا اطول بكثير مما تتخيلون” – “our relationship is much longer than you imagine”.
She said the intensity of the online backlash left her feeling compelled to respond, publishing a lengthy, heartfelt message on her personal X account.
“I never imagined this would happen”

Opening her statement, Garcia wrote: “لم اتخيل يوما ان مشاركة شيء بسيط كهذا ستتحول الى كل هذا” – “I never imagined that sharing something so simple would turn into all of this.”
She said she had been scrolling through the responses for hours: “اقرا التعليقات منذ ساعات، ورغم محاولتي الظهور بمظهر القوة، فانا انسانة ايضا. وراء هذا الحساب انسانة تشعر، تبكي، تخطي، ولا تتوقف عن كونها انسانة لمجرد انها في علاقة عاطفية”.
“I have been reading the comments for hours, and although I try to appear strong, I am human too,” she wrote. “Behind this account there is a person who feels, cries, makes mistakes, and does not stop being human just because she is in a romantic relationship.”
The influencer said the criticism had crossed a line from commentary on a public figure’s life into targeted hostility, and insisted that her presence in Yamal’s life did not harm him or anyone else.

Garcia drew a sharp distinction between constructive feedback and what she described as gratuitous abuse: “اتفهم النقد البناء، لكن هناك فرق شاسع بين التعبير عن الراي وبين اضاعة الوقت في اذلال او اهانة او تمني الشر لشخص لا تعرفونه”، موكدة انها لا توذي لامين يامال لانها “لم تاخذ شييا من احد، انا فقط اعيش حياتي”.
“I understand constructive criticism,” she said. “But there is a huge difference between expressing an opinion and wasting time humiliating, insulting or wishing harm on someone you do not know.” She stressed she was not harming Yamal, adding: “لم تاخذ شييا من احد، انا فقط اعيش حياتي” – “I have taken nothing from anyone, I am just living my life.”
Addressing her followers more broadly, she appealed for empathy towards the people behind high-profile social media accounts: “تذكروا قبل كتابة اي تعليق ان هناك شخصا اخر على الجانب الاخر من الشاشة لديه عايلة واصدقاء ومخاوف ومشاعر. لا تعلمون كيف يمكن لكلماتكم ان توثر فيه”.
“Remember before writing any comment that there is another person on the other side of the screen who has family and friends and fears and feelings,” she wrote. “You do not know how your words can affect them.”
Call for ‘a little humanity’ online

Garcia said the online vitriol was not only affecting her but also those close to her: “انا امراة ذات مشاعر، ولي عايلة تقرا هذه الاشياء ايضا، وامر بايام جيدة واخرى سيية، كاي شخص اخر. لا احاول اقناع احد بان يحبني، كل ما اطلبه هو قليل من التعاطف، قليل من الانسانية، لان لا احد يستحق ان يتلقى ميات او الاف الرسايل الكريهة”.
“I am a woman with feelings, and I have a family who also read these things, and I go through good days and bad days like anyone else,” she wrote. “I am not trying to convince anyone to like me, all I ask for is a little empathy, a little humanity, because no one deserves to receive hundreds or thousands of hateful messages.”
She ended her statement with a wider reflection on online culture, expressing hope that social media might one day become less hostile: “يتوقف الانترنت يوما ما عن كونه مكانا يحتفى فيه بالقسوة”، موكدة ان هدفها الوحيد هو “مشاركة تفاصيل بسيطة من حياتي دون نية ايذاء او ازعاج اي شخص”، وختمت قايلة: “جميعنا نحاول ان نعيش حياتنا على اكمل وجه. امل ان نختار دايما الرحمة على الكراهية”.
She said she wished that “the internet will one day stop being a place where cruelty is celebrated”, insisting that her only aim was “to share simple details of my life without any intention of harming or disturbing anyone”.
“We are all trying to live our lives as best we can,” Garcia concluded. “I hope we will always choose compassion over hate.”
