Barcelona and Spain prodigy Lamine Yamal has turned to surfing lessons with an Olympic champion just days after helping his country win the 2026 World Cup.
The 18-year-old forward, who starred as Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final, was filmed learning how to ride the waves before returning to pre-season training with Barcelona.
Spain’s narrow victory in the showpiece match secured “La Roja” a second World Cup star, adding to their 2010 triumph and reinforcing a new generation of talent, with Yamal at its heart.
But with the celebrations now winding down, the teenager has briefly stepped away from football to embrace a very different challenge.
Surfing tutorial with Gabriel Medina
Global sports network ESPN published a video showing Yamal taking surfing lessons under the guidance of one of the sport’s biggest names.
It said: “البطل الاولمبي البرازيلي جابرييل ميدينا يمنح النجم الاسباني دروسا في التزلج على الامواج”.
The clip shows the Spain international on a surfboard, attempting to find his balance on the water, while Brazilian surfing star Gabriel Medina – a multiple world champion and Olympic medallist – offers instructions and encouragement.
The session appears to have taken place during Yamal’s short break following Spain’s World Cup triumph, as he makes the most of his time off before reporting back to Barcelona.
From global stage to summer break
Yamal celebrated the World Cup win extensively with his Spain team-mates and fans, taking part in events and parades as the squad returned home with the trophy.
Having helped deliver the title in a tight final against Argentina, settled by a single goal, the youngster was granted a rest period before resuming club duties.
Barcelona are preparing for the upcoming season with expectations high after Yamal’s rapid rise at both domestic and international level. His involvement in the World Cup run has cemented his status as one of European football’s brightest prospects.
The brief diversion into surfing suggests the player is attempting to unwind mentally and physically after a demanding campaign.
Balancing fame, pressure and recovery
The sight of Yamal embracing a new sport underscores how leading footballers increasingly turn to alternative activities to decompress between seasons.
Surfing, with its focus on balance, core strength and concentration, is sometimes used as a cross-training tool, but in this case appears primarily recreational – an opportunity for the teenager to enjoy a different environment away from the spotlight of elite football.
Yet even during his downtime, Yamal remains a figure of intense interest. The ESPN video quickly circulated online, with fans discussing both his World Cup heroics and his efforts to master the surfboard.
As his holiday draws to a close, attention will now shift back to how Yamal translates his international success into consistent performances for Barcelona, with supporters expecting the newly crowned world champion to play a central role in the club’s campaign.
