France captain Kylian Mbappé has sparked discussion ahead of the 2026 World Cup after appearing to refer to Senegal as Africa’s champions during a television interview, before immediately questioning his own statement and mentioning Morocco.
The comments came during a lengthy appearance on French broadcaster M6, where the Real Madrid forward discussed France’s prospects at the tournament and looked ahead to the team’s opening match against Senegal next Tuesday.
While reflecting on the encounter, Mbappé described the challenge awaiting France before quickly correcting himself.
He said: “World Cup matches are exciting; we’ll be playing against the African champions.”
The 26-year-old then laughed and added: “I don’t know if they are really the champions or if it’s Morocco … let’s leave that debate out of it.”
The remarks quickly attracted attention among football supporters, particularly in Morocco, where many fans believe their national team should be regarded as the continent’s leading side following recognition from the Confederation of African Football.
Comments Draw Reaction From Moroccan Supporters
Mbappé’s observation generated debate among sections of the Moroccan football community, with some supporters taking issue with the suggestion that Senegal hold the title of Africa’s champions.
The discussion has also attracted interest because of Mbappé’s close friendship with Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi.
