Kylian Mbappe named Real Madrid’s August stand-out after La Liga scoring burst

Real Madrid have named Kylian Mbappe as their Player of the Month for August after the France forward made a strong start to the new La Liga campaign.

Mbappe won the award ahead of the rest of the squad, including England midfielder Jude Bellingham, to claim his first monthly honour with Real Madrid this season. The club announced the result on Thursday evening.

The 26-year-old scored four goals in Real Madrid’s opening three league matches. He played all 270 minutes available during those games, attempted 18 shots at the opposition goal and completed 111 passes for his team-mates.

The club celebrated his achievement on social media with the message:

Although he missed out on the award, Bellingham also contributed significantly during Real Madrid’s opening weeks of the league season.

The England international featured in all three matches, scoring twice and providing two assists in 245 minutes on the pitch. His involvement directly contributed to four goals during the first three rounds of the campaign.

Mbappe’s figures gave him the edge in the monthly vote, with his four goals forming the central part of his claim to the award. His contribution came as Real Madrid began the new La Liga season with three victories from three matches.

Real Madrid will return to league action against Real Betis on Friday evening in the fourth round of the competition.

The Spanish champions currently sit second in the La Liga table with nine points from their opening three games. They go into the match, however, with a number of players unavailable.

Real Madrid’s award announcement therefore comes as the team prepares for a fixture that will test the depth of the squad, with Mbappe and Bellingham having already made a decisive impact at the start of the season.

While Mbappe has been rewarded for his goalscoring output, Bellingham’s combination of goals and assists ensured he was among the leading contenders for the prize. The pair have been central to Real Madrid’s early attacking production, with their respective contributions accounting for eight goals in the club’s first three league matches.

Friday’s meeting with Real Betis will give Real Madrid the opportunity to maintain their perfect start and preserve their position near the top of the table. The match will also come with the club managing a lengthy list of absences.
