Kruger United will make their historic Betway Premiership debut at home against Kaizer Chiefs at Mbombela Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00.
The newly promoted side earned automatic promotion after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship and will begin life in South Africa’s top flight against one of the country’s biggest clubs. The opening fixture also gives Kruger United, known as the Village Boys, an opportunity to introduce themselves to the Premier Soccer League in front of their home supporters.
Kaizer Chiefs have confirmed their starting line-up for the match, while Kruger United’s XI remains to be announced.
Kaizer Chiefs start with Petersen in goal, behind a defence of Reeve Frosler, Inacio Miguel, Njabulo Ngcobo and Njabulo Monyane. Edson Castillo? Wait, must preserve source only. Need not invent. Let’s stick exact list perhaps format no positions.
Kaizer Chiefs’ starting XI is: Petersen, Monyane, Kwinika, Miguel, Frosler, Maboe, Ndlovu, Chislett, Da Silva, Baartman and Vilakazi.
Their substitutes are Leaner, Solomons, Nkgwesa, Moloisane, Mthethwa, Ngcobo, Mmodi, Ighodaro and Duba.
Kruger United’s starting line-up will be confirmed later.
The match marks the beginning of a new era for Kaizer Chiefs under French coach Fernando da Cruz. The former Lille assistant has taken over from Nasreddine Nabi and will be tasked with helping the Amakhosi build on their third-place finish last season.
Kaizer Chiefs will be aiming to open the new campaign with three points, while Da Cruz is expected to bring an attacking, high-pressing approach to the Soweto club.
Kruger United have also been active in strengthening their squad ahead of their first top-flight season. Among their experienced additions are Katlego Mohamme, Kwanda Mngonyama and Thabang Sibanyoni.
The promoted club have also signed Rwanda international goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwarif from Kaizer Chiefs on loan. Under local loan regulations, Ntwarif is eligible to play against his parent club.
Kaizer Chiefs have added to their own squad during the transfer window, including defender Thabo Moloisane and Tanzanian midfielder Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko.
The contest is expected to offer an early tactical contrast. Kruger United are likely to focus on staying compact and attempting to threaten on the counter-attack, while Kaizer Chiefs will look to dominate possession and create space by moving the ball quickly into wide areas.
On paper, Kaizer Chiefs begin as favourites, but the first match of a new league season can produce unexpected results. Kruger United will be determined to mark their Betway Premiership arrival with a memorable performance against a high-profile opponent.
