Orlando Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza has bought Relebohile Mofokeng a house after losing a R200,000 bet over whether the club would win last season’s league title.
Mofokeng’s father, Sechaba Mofokeng, said the wager was made before Orlando Pirates began their campaign, when the Buccaneers had gone 14 years without winning the league championship.
The agreement stated that Mofokeng would pay Khoza R200,000 if the club failed to lift the title. If Orlando Pirates ended their drought, however, Khoza would buy the winger a house of his choice.
“So they made a bet, if they didn’t win the league, he [Mofokeng] would give the Chairman R200,000. He said, if I win the league, the Chairman would buy him any house of his choice,” Sechaba told Soccer Laduma.
Orlando Pirates went on to win the championship last season, with Mofokeng playing an important role in helping the Soweto club secure the title. The outcome left the 22-year-old speechless, according to his father.
Sechaba confirmed that Khoza fulfilled his part of the agreement and had delivered the house.
“The house is there, he delivered,” he added.
Mofokeng spent four years with Orlando Pirates before moving to Royal Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium in July. During his time with the Buccaneers, he won seven trophies, including the league title.
The winger’s father also described the close relationship between Mofokeng and Khoza, saying the chairman had made a significant contribution to his son’s life.
“He did so much for me in my life and he taught me a lot about life. I think he deserved to get something back,” Sechaba said.
Mofokeng left Orlando Pirates after scoring 29 goals in more than 120 appearances. He has also made an early impression in Belgium, having impressed during his first four months with Royal Union Saint-Gilloise.
