Emirati businessman Khalaf Al Habtoor has firmly denied reports linking him with a potential takeover of Egyptian giants Zamalek or an investment in the club’s football company.
Al Habtoor dismissed the speculation as false, insisting that he had neither submitted a financial offer nor held negotiations with the Cairo-based club over a possible investment.
In a statement, the businessman said he was surprised that reports about his alleged interest had resurfaced across media outlets and social media platforms.
“I would like to clarify that this news is completely false and baseless. I have not made any offer to buy the club or invest in it, nor have I entered into any negotiations in this regard, and everything published about financial sums or alleged agreements has no relation to the truth,” he said.
The reports had suggested that Al Habtoor was considering acquiring the Egyptian club or providing financial backing to its football company.
Despite rejecting any involvement in a potential takeover, Al Habtoor expressed admiration for Zamalek, describing it as a prestigious sporting institution and reaffirming his respect for Egyptian football.
He also highlighted his interest in supporting young people and sporting initiatives in Egypt, pointing to his previous involvement in recognising the Egyptian national team following what he described as its honourable performance at the World Cup.
However, he stressed that supporting sport was different from investing in or managing football clubs.
“Supporting sports and youth is one thing, and investing in and managing football clubs is something else entirely. I don’t have investments in this field, nor do I claim to have the necessary experience to manage and develop sports clubs, and I have no plans to get involved in it,” he added.
Al Habtoor also urged media organisations to verify information involving his name, business interests and investments before publishing it, warning against presenting inaccurate reports as established facts.
His clarification puts an end to the latest speculation surrounding a possible investment by the Emirati businessman in Zamalek, although the club continues to attract attention over its financial and administrative future.
