Khalaf Al Habtoor denies reports of bid to buy Zamalek

United Arab Emirates businessman Khalaf Al Habtoor has rejected reports that he is seeking to buy Zamalek or invest in the Egyptian club’s football company.

Al Habtoor said there had been no financial offer, discussions or negotiations involving the Cairo-based club, bringing to an end speculation that had circulated in Egyptian media and on social media.

The businessman addressed the reports in a statement published on his official Facebook page.

“I was surprised to see reports circulating again in some media outlets and on social media claiming that I intend to buy Zamalek or submit financial offers to invest in its football company,” he wrote.

“I would like to make clear that these reports are entirely untrue and have no basis whatsoever. I have not made any offer to buy the club or invest in it, nor have I entered into any negotiations on the matter.

“Everything being published about financial sums or alleged agreements has no connection with the truth.”

Al Habtoor said he held Zamalek and its supporters in high regard, while also stressing his commitment to supporting sport and young people in Egypt.

He said, however, that backing sporting activities was fundamentally different from investing in football clubs or taking responsibility for their management.

“I am a sports enthusiast and have the utmost respect and appreciation for the historic Zamalek, as well as all Egyptian sports clubs and their supporters,” he added.

“I have always been keen to support Egyptian youth and encourage their achievements. I have demonstrated that in practice through our initiatives to support sport, including honouring the Egypt national football team after its commendable performance at the World Cup.”

Al Habtoor went on to draw a clear distinction between those initiatives and involvement in the running of clubs.

“Supporting sport and young people is one thing, while investing in and managing football clubs is something entirely different,” he said.

“I do not have investments in this area, nor do I claim to possess the expertise required to manage and develop sports clubs. I have no plans to enter this field.”

He also called on media organisations to verify information before publishing reports connected to his name, business projects or investments.

Al Habtoor asked outlets not to present inaccurate claims as established facts.

He concluded by expressing his affection and appreciation for Egypt and its people, while wishing Zamalek and all Egyptian clubs continued progress and success.

“I send all my love and appreciation to the sisterly Arab Republic of Egypt and its dear people. I wish Zamalek and all Egyptian clubs continued progress and success, and Egyptian sport further achievements and excellence,” he said.
