Mamelodi Sundowns will look to Grant Kekana, Nuno Santos and Brayan Leon to provide the decisive moments when they face Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 final at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 18:00.
The three players have different responsibilities for Sundowns. Kekana’s experience will be important in keeping the defence organised, Santos is expected to supply the creativity needed to break down Pirates, while Leon will lead the attack and provide the finishing threat.
At the back, the 33-year-old Kekana brings composure, positional awareness and valuable experience. The centre-back will be tasked with directing the defensive line and ensuring Sundowns retain their structure when placed under pressure.
Kekana has been a consistent performer this season, completing 465 passes in domestic appearances at a success rate of 94,7%. He has also made 14 clearances and delivered 21 accurate long balls, helping Sundowns begin attacks from defence.
Santos will have the responsibility of finding openings in the Orlando Pirates defence. The midfielder has already shown his ability to perform on an international stage during the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
His most notable contribution came against Saudi giants Al Ahli, when he scored both goals in a dramatic 2-1 victory. That performance underlined his ability to influence a match in a high-pressure situation.
Santos’ contribution extended beyond his brace. He completed 40 accurate passes, made six ball recoveries and won four physical duels as he helped Sundowns move between defensive and attacking phases.
Leon, meanwhile, will carry much of the responsibility for converting the opportunities created by his team-mates. The Colombian striker has already caused problems for Pirates, scoring a decisive brace in a previous match against the Buccaneers.
In seven league starts this season, Leon has scored three goals and provided one assist. He has attempted 21 shots, with 11 on target, and created five major scoring opportunities.
His strength, movement and finishing give Sundowns a significant threat in the final third. To help the Brazilians lift the MTN8 trophy, Leon will need to make the most of the service supplied by Santos and the rest of the Sundowns attack.
