Frédéric Kanouté believes Aston Villa hold a slight advantage ahead of the Europa League final, although he expects SC Freiburg to provide a difficult challenge in the battle for the trophy.
The former Sevilla FC striker, who enjoyed major success in European competition during his playing career, shared his assessment of the final in an interview with Footy-Africa.
Kanouté pointed to Aston Villa’s consistency, squad balance and attacking quality as important reasons why the Premier League side may enter the match as marginal favourites.
“Aston Villa have shown throughout this campaign that they are among the best teams in Europe. Their squad is well-balanced, they have experience in key areas, and players capable of turning a game around in crucial moments. I think they have a slight advantage going into this match,” he said.
Despite that view, the former Mali international warned against underestimating Freiburg, insisting the Bundesliga side had earned their place in the final through discipline, organisation and mental strength.
“The team is organized, hardworking, and mentally very strong. Teams of this caliber are always dangerous in cup finals because they fight for every ball and never lose hope.”
Kanouté also reflected on his own experiences in European football, recalling the unpredictability of continental finals during his time with Sevilla.
The former striker was part of Sevilla’s successful UEFA Cup era and established himself as one of Africa’s most respected forwards during his years in Spain.
Drawing from those experiences, he stressed that form and history often become less significant once a final begins.
“In a final, history and current form sometimes cease to matter once the final whistle blows. I remember many difficult evenings in the UEFA Cup with Sevilla. Freiburg will give Aston Villa a tough time in their quest to win the trophy.”
Kanouté expects a closely fought contest and believes a single attacking moment could ultimately determine the outcome of the final.
“I expect a very close match, which could be decided by a single moment of brilliance. Aston Villa might have a bit more creativity in attack, and that could make the difference. But Freiburg will undoubtedly put up a fierce fight.”
The final is set to showcase contrasting styles, with Aston Villa’s attacking approach expected to face a disciplined Freiburg side determined to upset the favourites.
