Ola Aina’s Nottingham Forest have reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League after securing a narrow victory over FC Porto, completing a 2-1 aggregate win.
The Premier League side sealed their progression with a 1-0 triumph at the City Ground, where an early goal from Morgan Gibbs-White proved decisive in a tense second-leg encounter.
The breakthrough came in the 12th minute following a defensive lapse from Porto. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa failed to deal with a clearance, allowing Neco Williams to regain possession quickly. He released Gibbs-White into space, and the Forest captain drove forward before cutting inside and striking a shot that took a deflection off Zaidu Sanusi on its way into the net.
The contest had already been dramatically altered just minutes earlier. In the eighth minute, Jan Bednarek was shown a straight red card for a high and reckless challenge, leaving Porto to play almost the entire match with 10 men. The dismissal forced the Portuguese side to reorganise early and adopt a more cautious approach.
Nottingham Forest capitalised on their numerical advantage, controlling possession and dictating the tempo of the game. Porto struggled to find rhythm after the sending-off, with their attacking opportunities limited as Forest pushed them deeper into their own half.
Forest’s defensive discipline once again played a key role, with Ola Aina delivering a composed performance throughout the match. Having also featured in the first leg, which ended 1-1, Aina has been a consistent presence during the club’s European campaign. He completed the full 90 minutes, helping to maintain structure at the back as Porto searched for a way back into the tie.
For Porto, Terem Moffi was included in the starting line-up and remained involved in their attacking efforts. He was shown a yellow card in the 32nd minute before being substituted in the 66th minute as the visitors looked to refresh their forward options.
Zaidu Sanusi, who inadvertently deflected in the decisive goal, was withdrawn at the start of the second half in the 46th minute.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Porto continued to push forward and created occasional openings. However, they lacked the necessary precision in the final third to trouble Forest’s defence.
In the closing stages, Forest remained compact and organised, absorbing pressure as Porto committed players forward in search of an equaliser. Their defensive resilience ensured that the visitors were unable to break through.
The final whistle confirmed Nottingham Forest’s place in the semi-finals, marking a significant milestone in their European journey.
