Senegal defender Kalidou Koulibaly has sought to regain his composure following a difficult outing for Al-Hilal by performing Umrah less than 48 hours after the Saudi club’s defeat by Neom.
Koulibaly played the full match as Al-Hilal suffered a 2-0 defeat in the sixth round of the Roshan League, a result that marked the team’s first loss of the season.
The experienced defender endured a particularly difficult evening, with his performance coming under scrutiny as Al-Hilal’s defensive problems became increasingly apparent.
Koulibaly was directly involved in the opening goal when an own goal attributed to the Senegal international gave Neom the lead. The mistake increased the pressure on the defender, who was already being assessed alongside the rest of an Al-Hilal back line that struggled throughout the match.
The defeat was a rare setback for Al-Hilal, but it also exposed defensive weaknesses that manager Simone Inzaghi will need to address quickly as the league campaign continues.
Rather than allow the criticism to dominate his attention, Koulibaly chose to step away from the immediate footballing pressure.
Less than two days after the match, he visited the Holy Mosque and performed the rituals of Umrah. The decision provided the defender with an opportunity to seek psychological calm and begin moving beyond the disappointment of the Neom match.
Koulibaly’s decision, however, was not necessarily a direct response to the defeat.
The Senegalese defender has performed Umrah on previous occasions and has maintained the practice for years, including during his time playing in European leagues. It has therefore become part of his personal life rather than something he does only after difficult results or periods of criticism.
Nevertheless, the timing of his latest visit comes as Koulibaly faces increased attention over his display against Neom.
His decision to focus away from the noise surrounding the defeat could allow him to regain his balance before returning to competitive action.
For Al-Hilal, there is little time to dwell on the result. The club is preparing for its next league fixture against Al-Taawoun on Saturday evening, when it will look to respond immediately and return to winning ways.
Despite the defeat, Al-Hilal remain at the top of the Roshan League standings. The club have 15 points, level with Al-Qadisiyah, meaning the loss against Neom has not yet cost them their position at the summit.
However, the result has highlighted concerns within the defence.
Koulibaly is likely to attract particular attention when Al-Hilal face Al-Taawoun. His challenge will not simply be to recover from the own goal against Neom, but also to restore the level of performance expected from one of the key figures in the team’s defence.
The match could therefore provide the Senegalese defender with an immediate opportunity to answer his critics on the pitch.
For Inzaghi, the fixture also offers a chance to address the defensive shortcomings exposed in the previous game while ensuring that Al-Hilal maintain their position near the top of the league.
Koulibaly’s response away from football has already provided one form of reset. The next test will come on the field.
After a damaging night against Neom, intense criticism and a subsequent visit to the Holy Mosque, the defender now has an opportunity to turn the disappointment into motivation.
Whether he can produce a stronger display against Al-Taawoun will determine whether the Neom defeat remains a difficult memory or becomes the starting point for a renewed run of form at the heart of Al-Hilal’s defence.
