Kaizer Chiefs have officially unveiled winger Langelihle Phili as their latest signing, raising the question of whether the 21-year-old will move straight into Fernando Da Cruz’s starting XI.
Phili has signed his contract with Chiefs after joining from Stellenbosch FC, following weeks of speculation over his future. He enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, scoring seven goals and providing one assist in 21 league appearances.
His arrival gives Da Cruz another attacking option, but the Chiefs head coach faces a selection dilemma with several players competing for places in the team. The issue is particularly relevant after the club’s opening match of the new season, when some unexpected names were included in the starting line-up.
Chiefs began their campaign with a 3-1 win over newcomers Kruger United. Ethan Chislett started in the number 10 role, while Luke Baartman was selected on the wing in attack.
There are also other players who could force their way into the team in the coming weeks. Thabo Moloisane, another recent arrival from Stellenbosch FC, is expected to challenge for a starting place. Wandile Duba strengthened his case after scoring twice as a substitute and could be rewarded with a start in the next match.
That fixture will see Chiefs face Golden Arrows in the MTN8 at FNB Stadium on Sunday, 9 August, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00.
Mduduzi Shabalala is currently unavailable after breaking his arm. However, he is expected to return soon and could eventually reclaim his position in the side. His return would create another contest for a starting role, with Shabalala likely to compete directly with Phili for the place.
If all of the squad’s leading options are fit and in good form, a possible Chiefs line-up would be:
Petersen; Monyane, Moloisane, Miguel, Frosler; Maboe, Ndlovu; Duba, Vilakazi, Phili; Silva.
The selection picture will continue to develop as the season progresses, particularly with new signings and returning players competing for places. Phili’s arrival has added further depth to an attack that already includes a number of options, while Duba’s performance from the bench has given Da Cruz another decision to make before the MTN8 tie.
Elsewhere in the schedule, Orlando Pirates will play Durban City on Saturday, 8 August, at 15:00. Mamelodi Sundowns will face Polokwane later that day at 18:00.
