Kaizer Chiefs are expected to make changes when they host Sekhukhune United at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, with Fernando Da Cruz’s side aiming to recover from their disappointing MTN8 quarter-final exit.
The Soweto giants were beaten 1-0 by Golden Arrows in the last eight this past weekend. That result followed a promising start to the competition, when Chiefs defeated newcomers Kruger United 3-1 in their opening match.
Chiefs must now switch their focus back to the Betway Premiership, where they currently sit at the top of the table. However, they will be aware of the threat posed by Sekhukhune United after suffering their first league defeat of last season against Ba Bina Noko despite making a strong start to that campaign.
The home side will be determined to avoid a repeat at FNB Stadium. A second successive defeat could bring increased scrutiny on Da Cruz and his players, while victory would help rebuild confidence after their early MTN8 disappointment.
Chiefs could be boosted by the return of striker Flavio Silva, who missed the loss to Golden Arrows because of injury. His availability would provide another attacking option as the Amakhosi look to maintain their position at the top of the league.
Mduduzi Shabalala is in contention to move into the starting XI, while Asanele Velebayi is also pushing for a starting place. Luke Baartman is expected to keep his place after impressing in Chiefs’ first two matches of the season.
There may also be a change in defence, with Bradley Cross tipped to return to the lineup. Thabo Moloisane is expected to continue at centre-back.
The predicted Kaizer Chiefs starting XI against Sekhukhune United is: Brandon Petersen; Thabo Monyane, Thabo Moloisane, Miguel Inacio, Bradley Cross; Lebohang Maboe, Adolf Mtasingwa Bitegeko; Mduduzi Shabalala; Luke Baartman, Asanele Velebayi, Flavio Silva.
The match gives Chiefs an immediate opportunity to put their cup disappointment behind them, but Sekhukhune’s previous success against them means Da Cruz’s team cannot afford to underestimate the visitors.
A strong performance and three points would allow Chiefs to respond positively to the Golden Arrows defeat, while another setback would increase pressure on a side that began the season with ambitions of challenging across domestic competitions.
