Kaizer Chiefs missed the chance to claim a statement win over Mamelodi Sundowns after a 1-1 draw at FNB Stadium on Saturday, with two key decisions helping to explain why they could not protect their advantage.
Kaizer Chiefs spent long periods defending deep as Mamelodi Sundowns controlled possession, but the home side broke through in the 63rd minute.
The goal came after the Sundowns defence failed to deal with a dangerous ball into the area. Siphesihle Ndlovu showed excellent strength to hold off two defenders before picking out Langelihle Phili.
The winger finished confidently, sending the ball beyond Ronwen Williams to put Kaizer Chiefs in front.
Their lead, however, lasted only 10 minutes. Cassius Mailula equalised for the visitors, and Sundowns ultimately left with a point after Chiefs were unable to find a second goal.
Phili’s early withdrawal reduced Chiefs’ threat
Immediately after scoring, Phili was substituted for Ethan Chislett.
The change was understandable because Phili had already been booked for removing his shirt during the goal celebration. A second yellow card would have left Kaizer Chiefs with 10 men, so Fernando Da Cruz may have wanted to remove that risk.
However, the decision also meant Chiefs lost one of their most dangerous attacking players at an important moment.
If Da Cruz was concerned about Phili’s disciplinary situation, Mduduzi Shabalala could have provided a more attacking replacement. With Wandile Duba already on the pitch, Shabalala’s pace and ability to carry the ball may have caused further problems for the Sundowns defence.
His direct running could also have created additional space for Duba to exploit.
Instead, Kaizer Chiefs’ attacking threat was reduced just as Sundowns were forced to push forward in search of an equaliser. The visitors were chasing the game, but the hosts no longer had Phili available to take advantage of the spaces that could have opened up.
A cautious finish cost Chiefs an opportunity
As the match moved into its final stages, Kaizer Chiefs appeared increasingly satisfied with securing a draw.
Da Cruz brought on Adolf Mtasingwa for Lebohang Maboe late in the game. The change suggested the priority had shifted from searching for a winning goal to protecting the 1-1 scoreline.
That approach was understandable against a Mamelodi Sundowns side capable of punishing opponents quickly. However, Kaizer Chiefs were playing at home and had already demonstrated that they could trouble the visitors.
A more attacking strategy could have involved bringing on Flavio Silva for Mmodi, while Shabalala could have replaced Phili. If Amakhosi had wanted to commit more players forward, Mfundo Vilakazi could also have come on for Maboe.
Those changes might not have guaranteed a winner, but they would have signalled a greater determination to take all three points rather than simply avoid defeat.
Kaizer Chiefs had taken the lead and had an opportunity to claim a result that would have carried significant weight against Sundowns. Instead, they became more conservative after Mailula’s equaliser and appeared more concerned with ensuring they did not lose.
Against one of the strongest teams in the division, settling for a point can be defended. But after finding a way through the Sundowns defence, the Glamour Boys may look back on the match as a missed opportunity.
