Mendes earns praise after COSAFA success
While Chiefs assess Baartman’s fitness, Diski Challenge coach Vela Khumalo believes the club has another promising young player capable of progressing to the first team.
Khumalo says 18-year-old Steven Mendes already has the maturity and natural ability required to represent Chiefs at senior level.
Mendes was the leading scorer and won the Golden Boot at the recent COSAFA U20 tournament in Maputo, Mozambique. Although he is nominally a midfielder, he was used as a striker during the competition.
The teenager is known as ‘Stevie G’ among some of his team-mates. Local reports have also linked him with interest from MLS side Chicago Fire.
