Kaizer Chiefs will start the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign against newly promoted Kruger United on Saturday, seeking a third consecutive opening-day victory and a winning beginning for new head coach Fernando Da Cruz.
The match will be played at Mbombela Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 20:00 on 1 August.
The fixture represents the beginning of a new chapter for Amakhosi, with Da Cruz taking charge of the club for the first time in a competitive match. The 54-year-old is the first coach from France to lead Kaizer Chiefs during the Premier Soccer League era and only the second France-born manager in the club’s history.
He follows Philippe Troussier, who guided Kaizer Chiefs to the BP Top 8 title in 1994.
Kaizer Chiefs enter the season aiming to win a 14th league title overall and a fifth since the PSL was established in 1996. The campaign will also mark the club’s 57th season in South Africa’s top flight and their 31st in the PSL era.
Saturday’s fixture will be the club’s 1,759th league match in total, including their 923rd since the formation of the PSL in 1996.
Strong record in opening fixtures
History provides encouragement for Kaizer Chiefs, who have won 17 of their 30 opening league matches in the PSL era. They have drawn eight and lost only five of those games.
Amakhosi will be attempting to extend a run of two successive opening-day victories. They began the previous two league campaigns with away wins against Marumo Gallants and Stellenbosch FC.
Kaizer Chiefs have often been required to start their seasons away from home. This weekend’s match will be their 21st PSL opening fixture on the road.
In their previous 20 away openers, the Soweto club have recorded 12 wins, five draws and two defeats. They have therefore avoided losing in 18 of those matches.
Their most emphatic opening-day success came in the 2012/13 season, when they defeated AmaZulu 6-0 away from home.
Kruger United make history
Kruger United secured promotion to the top flight after winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Their meeting with Kaizer Chiefs will be only the third occasion on which the club has faced a team from Mpumalanga in the PSL era.
The previous two Mpumalanga-based opponents were Mpumalanga Black Aces and TS Galaxy.
For Kaizer Chiefs, the fixture combines the pressure of a title challenge with the arrival of a new head coach. A positive result would allow Da Cruz to make an immediate impact while preserving the club’s strong record in league openers.
The listed match prediction is Kruger United 0-2 Kaizer Chiefs.
