Oliver Kahn believes Jurgen Klopp should not have publicly questioned Joshua Kimmich’s leadership during the debate surrounding the Germany captain.
“Klopp said something very interesting about Kimmich: ‘I’d also like to see what a team without a leader would look like.’ From Kimmich’s perspective, I don’t think that statement was particularly positive,” Kahn said on RTL/Sky Sport while discussing the issue during the recent Nations League fixtures.
Kahn said Klopp was referring to whether a strong personality could potentially hold a team back, rather than directly criticising Kimmich’s leadership.
“He wanted to see whether a certain personality could, in some way, slow a team down. That situation does exist,” Kahn said.
But the former Germany goalkeeper questioned the decision to raise the point publicly.
“Such things shouldn’t be said publicly, because it devalues the player to some extent,” he added.
