Juventus fans leave Allianz Stadium early as Lazio supporters celebrate away win

Most Juventus supporters left the Allianz Stadium before full-time as their side suffered a 3-0 home defeat by Lazio, while the visiting fans celebrated in a packed away section.

The result on Sunday night was Juventus’ second defeat in their past five Serie A matches. Although the stadium was sold out, almost all of the home support had departed by the closing stages, with Lazio three goals ahead.

The Juventus fans who remained responded with loud boos at the final whistle. Lazio’s players, meanwhile, celebrated their victory in front of an away end filled with travelling Biancocelesti supporters.

Such scenes are unusual for Lazio, whose players have rarely been able to celebrate victories alongside their fans at home this season. The club’s ultras and most ordinary supporters have been boycotting matches at the Stadio Olimpico since the end of last season.

The boycott is a protest against owner Claudio Lotito. Supporters hope reduced matchday income will eventually persuade him to sell the club to a more ambitious owner.

Lazio have averaged barely 9,000 spectators at home since the start of the current campaign. Away from Rome, however, their travelling support has continued to turn out in large numbers, with the away section sold out for each of their four matches on the road.

Despite the lack of home support, Lazio have made an unbeaten start under Gennaro Gattuso. They have won six Serie A matches and drawn one, leaving them top of the table alongside Inter on 19 points.
