Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio has undergone successful surgery on an injury to the bone in his right shin, with manager Jose Mourinho visiting him in hospital after the operation.
The Spanish club confirmed on Wednesday that the 23-year-old had required surgery after conservative treatment failed to resolve the problem.
Asencio had been dealing with discomfort in his shin since earlier in 2026. He initially opted to avoid an operation, but the fracture did not heal sufficiently and the pain returned.
Following further medical assessments, surgery was deemed necessary. The procedure has now been completed successfully, and Mourinho was present to greet Asencio when he regained consciousness.
The defender is expected to be unavailable for between two and four months, leaving Real Madrid with further concerns in defence. Eder Militao is also recovering from hamstring surgery.
Mourinho must now assess his options before Real Madrid’s match against Villarreal on 10 October. Asencio could be out until the new year, increasing the likelihood that the club will consider defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window.
Real Madrid currently sit six points behind La Liga leaders and rivals Barcelona, giving Mourinho the opportunity to adjust his squad during the mid-season transfer period.
