Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has criticised Mohamed Salah following the forward’s public comments about the club’s playing style after their recent defeat by Aston Villa in the Premier League.
Salah posted a lengthy message on Instagram which appeared to question Liverpool’s current tactical approach under head coach Arne Slot. In the post, the Egyptian forward promised supporters that the team would fight for a Champions League place, but also suggested the club needed to return to a more aggressive style of football.
The comments sparked widespread reaction on social media and have since drawn a strong response from Carragher, who spoke on Sky Sports.
“I wasn’t surprised by Salah’s recent comments. I thought something similar would happen after the end of the season, just like Ronaldo did when he left Manchester United, but now it has happened,” he said.
Carragher went on to accuse the Liverpool forward of prioritising personal views over the needs of the team during a critical stage of the season.
“I previously described him as selfish during a previous interview, and I believe that applies again now. Liverpool is going through a crucial week; they have not yet secured qualification for the Champions League, and the focus should be on the club’s interests, not just on Salah,” he added.
He also suggested that team selection decisions should be made purely on sporting merit, regardless of the player’s status at the club.
“If including Mohamed Salah in the weekend’s game gives the team the best chance of winning, then the manager should do it. The criticism I directed at Salah for his selfishness remains, as what matters is Liverpool’s best interest,” Carragher said.
Liverpool are still yet to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League, with their final fixtures carrying significant importance.
Carragher added that the situation could have been managed differently had qualification already been confirmed, allowing the manager to prioritise players who will remain at the club beyond the current season.
He also said Salah’s comments had placed Arne Slot in a difficult position at a crucial moment.
“Arne Slott is not in a strong position within the club at the moment, and Salah’s statement has put him in a difficult position, as he knows he is forced to make the right decision to avoid the fans’ anger,” he said.
Salah’s future at Liverpool has already been a major talking point, and the latest exchange has added further scrutiny to both the player and the club as the season reaches its conclusion.
