Jadon Sancho is reportedly close to joining Brazilian giants Palmeiras after becoming a free agent following the expiry of his Manchester United contract.
The former Manchester United winger is understood to be on the verge of agreeing a move to the club, according to journalist Alfonso Partidor. If completed, the transfer would represent a surprise next step for the 26-year-old, who is now set to continue his career in Brazil after a difficult spell in England.
Sancho is expected to sign a two-year contract with Palmeiras. The proposed agreement would also include an option to extend the deal by a further 12 months, provided the move is considered a success.
The England international left Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United in July 2021 in a transfer reported to be worth £73m. However, his time at Old Trafford failed to develop as expected, with Sancho scoring 12 goals in 83 appearances for the club.
His Manchester United career was also interrupted by three separate loan spells. He first returned to Borussia Dortmund before later moving temporarily to Chelsea and, most recently, Aston Villa.
Sancho’s departure from Manchester United came earlier in the summer when his contract expired, bringing an end to a disappointing five-year association with the club. He has remained without a club since then and is now being linked with a move to Palmeiras.
The proposed switch has been described as a shock move because it would take Sancho away from European football and into a new phase of his career with one of Brazil’s major clubs. Palmeiras are now understood to be close to securing the winger, although the deal has not been presented as completed.
Should the transfer go through, Sancho would join Palmeiras on an initial two-year arrangement, with the possibility of remaining for an additional season. The extension would depend on the move proving successful, according to the reported terms.
For now, the agreement remains at the verge-of-completion stage, with the details pointing towards Sancho’s next club being Palmeiras. His Manchester United contract has expired, his three loan spells are over and his next destination could be decided by the Brazilian side’s reported offer.
