Ivory Coast U17s arrive in Ouagadougou with AFCON qualification in sight

Ivory Coast’s U17 national team have arrived in Burkina Faso with the aim of securing qualification for the 2027 Africa U17 Cup of Nations.

The Elephants are in Ouagadougou for the WAFU-B qualifying tournament, which runs from 10 to 23 October 2026 and brings together seven West African nations competing for a place at the continental finals.

Ivory Coast coach Serges Bougouyou has named his squad after several weeks of preparation, with the final selection coming after a series of training camps designed to identify the country’s most promising young players.

The selected squad is made up largely of players born in 2010, with the coaching staff assessing talents from a wide range of competitions before deciding on the final group.

Players were drawn from clubs competing in Ligue 1, Ligue 2 and Division 3, as well as regional and district competitions.

The squad also includes players who featured in last season’s national U17 championship.

That broad recruitment process reflects the coaching staff’s approach of looking beyond the country’s leading clubs while attempting to assemble a team capable of competing against some of West Africa’s strongest youth sides.

Before the squad was confirmed, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) also carried out medical checks on the players.

The federation worked with the Abidjan Medical Imaging Center (CIMA) to organise preliminary MRI examinations for the young footballers.

All the players eventually selected for the tournament were declared eligible to compete after completing the medical process.

The Elephants have now settled in Ouagadougou, where their attention has turned fully towards the competition.

Ivory Coast are seeking a third successive qualification for the final phase of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations, giving the tournament added importance for Bougouyou and his young squad.

The challenge will be considerable, with seven countries involved in the WAFU-B qualifying competition.

Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Niger, Nigeria and Togo will all compete in Ouagadougou between 10 and 23 October.

With only one place described as the route to continental glory, every match will carry significant weight for the participating teams.

For Ivory Coast, the task is to navigate a competitive West African qualifying zone and secure their place at the 2027 U17 AFCON.

The team’s preparations have therefore focused not only on identifying talent but also on ensuring the selected players are ready physically and competitively for the demands of the tournament.

The involvement of players from different levels of Ivorian football also gives the squad a varied profile.

Some have emerged from the country’s top divisions, while others have made their mark in regional, district and youth competitions.

The coming days will provide the first major test of whether that selection strategy can produce the results Ivory Coast want.

For the young Elephants, the objective is clear: perform strongly in Ouagadougou and keep alive their hopes of returning to the continental U17 stage.

The tournament also offers an important opportunity for the next generation of Ivorian footballers to gain international experience.

With established West African youth football nations such as Ghana and Nigeria among the teams taking part, the competition is expected to provide a demanding test for Bougouyou’s side.

Ivory Coast will now look to turn weeks of preparation and squad assessment into performances on the pitch.
