Ivory Coast produced a spirited comeback to defeat France 2-1 in an international friendly in Nantes on Thursday, securing their first-ever victory over Les Bleus ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Elephants recovered from a goal down to inflict a rare defeat on Didier Deschamps‘ side, ending France’s nine-match unbeaten run and providing a major confidence boost before the tournament.
France appeared on course for victory after taking the lead through Rayan Cherki on the stroke of halftime. The Manchester City midfielder showcased his quality with a brilliant individual effort, cutting inside before firing into the far corner to cap an impressive first-half display.
Led by captain Kylian Mbappé, France dominated much of the opening period and created several opportunities. Mbappé tested goalkeeper Yahia Fofana early on, while Aurélien Tchouaméni and Cherki both came close to extending the advantage.
However, Ivory Coast emerged a transformed side after the break.
Strasbourg defender Guela Doué levelled matters in the 53rd minute after being released by Nicolas Pépé, calmly finishing past Mike Maignan to bring the Elephants back into the contest.
Doué then turned provider as Ivory Coast completed the turnaround. The defender delivered a dangerous cross that was converted by Amad Diallo, who finished from close range to give the visitors the lead.
France struggled to respond despite a host of second-half substitutions, with Deschamps making ten changes as he rotated his squad ahead of the World Cup.
Ivory Coast remained organised defensively and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle, earning a historic result against one of the tournament favourites.
The victory serves as a major morale boost for the Elephants before they begin their World Cup campaign against Ecuador on June 15. Germany and Curaçao are the other teams in their group.
France, meanwhile, will look to bounce back in their final warm-up match against Northern Ireland before opening their World Cup campaign against Senegal on June 16.
