Ivory Coast have been hit by an injury setback ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Clement Akpa withdrew from the squad, ruling him out of what would have been his first appearance at the tournament.
The Ivorian Football Federation confirmed the withdrawal, stating that the defender had suffered an injury and would not be able to take part in the competition. The announcement represents a significant disappointment for both the player and the national team as they finalise preparations for the global tournament.
Akpa, who was included in head coach Emerse Faé’s World Cup plans, had been expected to feature as part of the squad travelling to the competition. The left-back, who plays his club football for AJ Auxerre, was seen as part of the emerging group of players being integrated into the national setup ahead of the tournament.
His withdrawal means he will miss the chance to make his World Cup debut at the 2026 edition, which is regarded as the biggest stage in international football. The injury is being described as a cruel setback for the young defender at a crucial moment in his development.
According to the Ivorian Football Federation, the decision was made after the injury was confirmed, leaving the coaching staff with limited time to adjust the squad composition before the tournament begins.
In response to Akpa’s absence, Ivory Coast head coach Emerse Faé has moved quickly to name a replacement from the reserve list. Christopher Operi has been called up to take his place in the final squad.
Operi, who plays for Istanbul Başakşehir, arrives into the squad after what has been described as an impressive season in Turkey. The left-back made 22 appearances in the Turkish Süper Lig during the campaign and contributed four assists from defensive positions.
His inclusion provides Ivory Coast with an experienced alternative option on the left side of defence as they prepare for the demands of the World Cup. The coaching staff will now look to integrate him into the squad in the final stages of preparation.
The adjustment underlines the challenges teams face in the lead-up to major international tournaments, where injuries can force late changes and disrupt planned squad structures. For Côte d’Ivoire, the focus will now shift to ensuring stability within the group as they aim to remain competitive on football’s biggest stage.
Akpa’s absence is a setback for the player personally, as well as for the national team, but the swift response from the coaching staff ensures that his place has been filled ahead of the tournament.
