Ivory Coast international Nicolas Pépé rounded off a dominant performance from Villarreal as they thrashed Levante 5-1 to confirm their place in next season’s Champions League, strengthening Africa’s growing influence in European football.
The 30-year-old winger capped the scoring in the 90th minute, sealing a comprehensive victory that underlined Villarreal’s strong finish to the La Liga campaign.
The result ensured the Yellow Submarine remained firmly in third place, moving further clear of their nearest challengers and guaranteeing qualification for Europe’s elite competition.
Villarreal’s attacking display was built on a collective effort, but Pépé’s contribution once again highlighted his importance to the team during a crucial phase of the season.
The Ivorian has now scored in three consecutive matches, taking his tally to eight league goals and seven assists across all competitions.
The match began with Villarreal controlling possession and eventually finding the breakthrough before half-time through Georges Mikautadze.
However, Levante briefly threatened a comeback when they equalised early in the second half through Carlos Espi.
That moment proved short-lived as Villarreal responded with authority.
Alberto Moleiro restored the lead shortly after the hour mark, before Mikautadze struck again to extend the advantage.
Canadian international Tajon Buchanan then added a fourth goal, leaving Levante’s defence overwhelmed.
Pépé was instrumental throughout the attacking sequence. Operating on the right flank, he created one of the goals with a low cross that allowed Mikautadze to finish comfortably.
Later, he showcased his technical ability on the opposite wing, creating space and switching play effectively in the build-up to Buchanan’s strike.
With the contest effectively decided, Pépé added his own name to the scoresheet in the closing stages, finishing off the move in the 90th minute to complete the rout.
The victory not only highlighted Villarreal’s attacking strength but also confirmed their place among Europe’s top clubs next season.
Sitting third in the table, they are now well clear of fifth-placed Real Betis, who have five matches remaining, and hold a strong position ahead of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
For Levante, the defeat leaves them in a precarious position.
Currently 19th in the standings, they remain deep in the relegation zone and face an uphill battle to secure survival, with other teams around them still to play.
From an African perspective, Pépé’s resurgence comes at a crucial time.
Once seen as an unpredictable attacker, his recent form has added consistency to his game, turning him into a reliable figure in Villarreal’s forward line.
His performances have not only contributed to the club’s success but also reinforced the presence of African players making decisive impacts in Europe’s top leagues.
As the season approaches its conclusion, Villarreal will now look to maintain momentum heading into the Champions League, with Pépé expected to remain a key figure in their ambitions.
