‘It’s much better now’ – Ivorian forward Haller opens up on recovery journey

Ivorian striker Sébastien Haller has spoken of his improving condition after a challenging period, following his return to action for FC Utrecht in their narrow defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie.

Utrecht were beaten 4-3 in a dramatic encounter, with PSV snatching a late winner after a tense and high-scoring contest.

Despite the defeat, Haller’s contribution offered a positive sign for both the player and his team as he continues his gradual return to form.

The 31-year-old came off the bench in the 77th minute and made an immediate impact, setting up Jesper Karlsson for one of Utrecht’s goals.

It was a moment that underlined his growing sharpness after a difficult campaign disrupted by injuries and past health concerns.

Reflecting on his recent progress, Haller said: “I’ve been feeling much better these past few weeks.

“This has translated into increased playing time, and being able to contribute with an assist is really rewarding.”

For the Ivorian international, the journey back to full fitness has not been straightforward.

In 2022, Haller was diagnosed with testicular cancer, a major setback that interrupted his career at a critical stage.

Although he successfully returned to football, this season has been further complicated by a series of minor injuries that have limited his involvement.

“I was really unlucky. On top of that, I wasn’t in a good frame of mind; that didn’t help. Fortunately, it’s much better now ,” he added.

Haller has featured in 17 Eredivisie matches this season, largely from the bench, scoring one goal and registering three assists.

While those numbers may not reflect his full potential, his recent performances suggest he is regaining confidence and match fitness.

His club, FC Utrecht, currently sit ninth in the league standings following the defeat to PSV.

Despite the loss, there are signs of optimism as key players like Haller begin to rediscover their rhythm at a crucial stage of the season.

Beyond club football, Haller remains an important figure for the Ivory Coast national team.

He played a decisive role in his country’s triumph at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring vital goals in both the semi-final and final to help secure the title.

However, he was later ruled out of the 2025 edition due to injury, further highlighting the physical challenges he has faced in recent years.

As Utrecht look to finish the season strongly, Haller’s improving condition could prove significant.

His experience and attacking quality offer a boost to the squad, and his recent assist may be an early sign that he is turning a corner after a prolonged period of setbacks.
