Italy’s newspapers lead with Jannik Sinner’s plans to return in 2027, while Pio Esposito’s outstanding form has sparked debate over his role at Inter and his place in the Azzurri. The papers also focus on Giovanni Malago’s expected return as FIGC commissioner and a series of major club developments.
Sinner plans his comeback
Sinner is targeting a return at the Australian Open in January, although his recovery plan involving his knee, tournament schedule and therapy means he will lose the world number one ranking before the finals.
His message is: “I’ll see you in 2027.”
Esposito gives Italy a selection headache
The growth of Italy’s young players, from Kayode through the national youth teams, is another prominent theme. At the centre of the coverage is Pio Esposito, who has scored seven goals in 13 games.
Only Meazza had scored more goals for the Azzurri at the same age. Italy coach Mancini believes Esposito can reach the highest level and has compared his potential with that of former Inter striker Vieri and Luca Toni.
Esposito remains a substitute at Inter, leaving manager Chivu with a difficult decision over how to use the striker. Inter have secured his future, but Arsenal continue to monitor him.
The player’s numbers have led to headlines describing an “Esposito phenomenon” and drawing comparisons with some of Italy’s great forwards.
Malago set for another role
The FIGC has unanimously backed a proposal for CONI president Buonfiglio to appoint Malago as commissioner of the football federation again. Malago is expected to remain in charge ahead of the election on 14 December, when he will be the only candidate.
The arrangement allows Malago to replace himself in a different role and was presented as the only way to prevent a conflict. “A sad and embarrassing episode, common sense won in the end,” was the reaction reported by the papers.
Napoli hit by another injury
Napoli have been left “devastated” after the international break by another injury. Antonio Vergara is expected to be out for a month, following the problems suffered by Olivera and Favasuli.
The development has increased the pressure on manager Allegri.
Cristiano Ronaldo has also made headlines after saying: “I’m sorry, I will be back.” He added that “Jorge Jesus took back what he said, I’m ready to come back.”
Juventus track three players
Juventus are following Romano, Doumbia and Ndour. The club watched the Swiss-Italian Cagliari player Romano at the Dall’Ara, with Carnevali, Ottolini and Chiellini among those monitoring him.
Romano was bought for 6.5 million. Juventus have been interested in him since his Venezia days and want to sign him before his value rises, as happened with Alajbegovic. They also face competition from Fiorentina for the Sporting midfielder and the Fiorentina player.
Pellegri returns to Torino
Pietro Pellegri is back with Torino after two years on loan and two cruciate ligament injuries. He is expected to be on the bench against Udinese.
“I’m really motivated,” Pellegri said. He gives Abate another option, with Zapata only partly available and Adams a doubt.
