Morocco international defender Issa Diop says he is “very excited” after completing a long-term move to Ipswich Town from Fulham, signing a contract that runs until the summer of 2030.
The 27-year-old centre-back becomes one of Ipswich’s headline arrivals in the current transfer window as the club strengthens for its return to the Premier League.
Ipswich reached an agreement with Fulham despite Diop having a year remaining on his deal at Craven Cottage, with the London club choosing to cash in now rather than risk losing him for free next summer.
‘This feels like the right place for me’
Speaking after the club confirmed the transfer on Wednesday, Diop underlined his belief that Ipswich is the ideal next step in his career.
“I’m very excited about the next step in my career with Ipswich Town. I know the size of the club and its history, and I enjoyed all the conversations before making my decision,” he said.
“I feel that this is the right place for me. It has been a busy summer with the Morocco national team at the World Cup, but I am proud to be joining the club and I am looking forward to meeting the coaching staff, my team-mates and the fans soon.”
Diop, who has extensive top-flight experience in England, moves to Portman Road after spells in the Premier League with both Fulham and West Ham United.
O’Neil hails ‘experienced’ Premier League campaigner
Ipswich head coach Gary O’Neil welcomed the defender’s arrival and highlighted the value of his Premier League pedigree.
“Issa is an experienced player who has played a large number of games in the Premier League, and we are delighted to have him with us. He is a strong defender who brings experience and stability to the backline,” O’Neil said.
Diop’s physical presence and aerial ability are seen as key assets as Ipswich prepare to face top-flight attacks following their promotion.

Fulham sanctioned Diop’s departure despite having 12 months left on his contract. The west London side chose to secure a transfer fee in the current window rather than risk losing the player without compensation at the end of next season.
Diop made more than 50 Premier League appearances for Fulham and was part of their recent campaigns under Marco Silva. His move to Ipswich opens the door for Fulham to reshape their own defensive options ahead of the new season.
