Ismael Kamissoko: Mali’s next big talent attracting European interest

Ismael Kamissoko, captain of Mali’s Under-17 side, has been named among The Guardian’s 60 best young footballers in the world.

The midfielder, who plays for the Etoiles du Mande academy, is preparing to represent Mali at the next FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar. His performances have also attracted attention from Olympique de Marseille, Paris FC and Burnley.

Kamissoko first came to wider prominence at the 2025 UFOA-A U17 tournament in Bamako, where he established himself as one of the leading prospects in African football. His inclusion on The Guardian’s list has further underlined his growing reputation.

Demba Mamadou Traore, the former coach of Mali’s Aiglonnets, has followed Kamissoko since the player was in the minime category. Convinced by his ability and potential, Traore later made him captain of the Under-17 team.

The coach believes Kamissoko possesses the qualities required to develop into a leading player. His profile combines technical ability with an attacking approach, while his box-to-box style allows him to contribute across midfield.

Kamissoko also played a key role in Mali’s progress to the Africa Cup of Nations Under-17 tournament. More recently, he helped the side win the Alliance of Sahel States tournament, strengthening his status as one of the players to watch in the country’s youth set-up.

The next major test will come at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will be held in Qatar from 19 November to 13 December 2026.

Kamissoko is part of a promising group of Mali prospects attracting attention. The list also includes Aboubacar Maiga, known as “Messi”, who is set to join Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Djigui Koita, Issiaka Kone, nicknamed “La Magie”, and Yaya Niang.
