Internazionale have made Federico Dimarco’s contract extension one of their leading priorities, despite negotiations with the Italy winger not yet having started.
Dimarco’s current deal is due to expire in June 2027, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. On paper, that means fewer than 12 months remain before his contract ends, allowing other clubs to contact his representatives about a possible transfer.
However, a move away from Internazionale is considered unlikely. When the club agreed Dimarco’s previous renewal three years ago, it included an option allowing Internazionale to extend the agreement by another year on the same terms.
The winger’s importance to the club is another reason why his future is expected to be addressed quickly. Dimarco believes talks over a new contract should already have begun after his exceptional previous season, during which he scored seven goals and recorded 17 assists in Serie A.
Speaking at the Italian Football Gala on Thursday, Dimarco openly acknowledged his disappointment at the lack of progress.
“Unfortunately, we haven’t started talks about a renewal yet. I was hoping discussions would begin after last season. But now I just want to focus on the match against Napoli.”
His comments underline his expectation of receiving improved recognition after producing a campaign worthy of consideration as one of the club’s outstanding players of the season. Despite those expectations, no formal renewal discussions have taken place so far.
Internazionale’s attention in recent months has been focused on strengthening the squad and managing a change in sporting leadership. The club has been completing new signings while transferring the Sporting Director role from Ausilio to Baccin, with the new season already under way.
Dimarco’s position is now among the club’s most pressing contractual matters. Internazionale first need to resolve the situation surrounding Pio Esposito, after which Dimarco’s renewal could become Baccin’s first major assignment in his new position.
The club want to retain the winger and are committed to finding a solution, while Dimarco is seeking recognition that reflects his contribution. Baccin intends to settle the matter as soon as possible, continuing Internazionale’s policy of keeping its key players.
The situation does not currently suggest that Dimarco is close to leaving. Internazionale have both the option of extending his contract for a further season and a clear desire to secure his longer-term future. Nevertheless, the delay has created uncertainty, particularly because the player had expected discussions to begin after last season’s impressive campaign.
For now, Dimarco is concentrating on Internazionale’s match against Napoli. The contract issue is expected to return to the agenda once the club has dealt with Esposito’s situation and completed the transition in its sporting department.
