Inter sign Djed Spence from Tottenham to replace Dumfries

Inter have completed the signing of Tottenham right-back Djed Spence, with the England international joining the Serie A champions on a five-year contract in a reported €35m (£30m) deal.

The 26-year-old is expected to replace Denzel Dumfries in Cristian Chivu’s squad after the Netherlands international moved to Real Madrid earlier in the transfer window.

Spence joined Tottenham in 2022 and made 85 appearances for the Premier League club across all competitions. During his time in north London, he also spent periods on loan with Rennes, Leeds United and Genoa.

His move to Inter follows two seasons in which he became a more regular member of the Tottenham team. During that period, he won 366 duels – the second-highest total among all Spurs defenders.

Spence also ranked third among Tottenham defenders for tackles, with 82, and interceptions, with 56. His 36 chances created were joint-second among the club’s defenders across the same two-season period.

He played a part in Tottenham’s Europa League triumph in the 2024-25 campaign, a success that ended the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy.

Spence’s form also earned him a place in England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup. The Three Lions finished third at the tournament under manager Thomas Tuchel.

At the 2026 World Cup, Spence made 19 tackles, the most by an England defender in a single edition of the competition since Ashley Cole made 25 in 2002.

Inter will hope the former Tottenham player can provide the attacking and defensive qualities required to fill the role previously occupied by Dumfries. His arrival comes after a successful domestic campaign for the Italian club, who won both Serie A and the Coppa Italia in 2025-26.

Chivu’s side will begin their latest league campaign at home to Monza on 22 August. Spence’s five-year agreement means he has committed his immediate future to Inter as the club prepare to defend their Serie A title and continue competing at the top of Italian football.
