Inter Milan fight back against Fiorentina as Marcus Thuram makes club history

Inter Milan scored twice in the closing stages to beat Fiorentina 2-1 and move level on points with Lazio at the top of Serie A.

Fiorentina appeared set for victory after Alejandro Jimenez opened the scoring in the 65th minute with a powerful strike which Inter goalkeeper could only watch fly into the net.

But Marcus Thuram equalised for the hosts in the 90th minute before Piotr Zielinski completed the comeback by converting a penalty in the eighth minute of added time.

The result gave Inter a seventh win from their opening eight league matches. They have also drawn once and now have 22 points, with a superior goal difference placing them above Lazio after the eighth round of fixtures.

Thuram’s goal also secured a place for him in Inter’s history. He became only the third player to score in at least seven consecutive home Serie A matches during the era in which a win has been worth three points.

The France forward joined Romelu Lukaku, who achieved the same feat in 2021, and Christian Vieri, whose record run reached 11 successive home matches in 2003.

Fiorentina remain on four points after suffering their sixth defeat in eight matches. Their only other results this season have been one win and one draw, leaving them continuing to struggle at the start of the campaign.

The visitors had been close to holding on after Jimenez’s opener. His fierce attempt gave Inter no chance, but Thuram’s late finish restored parity and set up the decisive penalty in stoppage time.

Zielinski made no mistake from the spot to complete Inter’s dramatic turnaround and secure three valuable points.
