Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has dismissed suggestions that captain Lautaro Martinez could leave the club, insisting there are no circumstances that would lead to the Argentina striker’s departure.
Martinez remains central to Inter’s plans both as a leading forward and as one of the most influential figures in the dressing room. Marotta made his position clear before Inter’s opening Serie A match of the 2026-27 season against Monza.
“Lautaro is our captain and currently represents Inter’s history, and there are no circumstances that could lead him to leave. We should not even talk about it,” Marotta told DAZN.
The comments come amid renewed reports about Martinez’s future. The 28-year-old is regarded as one of the key members of the Inter side that won the Serie A title and has become an important presence on and off the pitch.
According to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio’s website, Marotta also outlined Inter’s ambitions for the new campaign and said winning the league title created an obligation for the squad to aim even higher.
“We have to raise our expectations, while recognising that we are champions of Italy. We are starting with the same motivation and objectives we had last season, holding on to the winning culture that has defined us in recent years,” he said.
Inter begin their title defence at San Siro against Monza, with the match providing an early test for a team seeking to retain its place at the top of Italian football.
Marotta said the club’s project had been built around continuity, although Inter had needed to take the age profile of several players into account during the summer.
He added that the squad’s experience remained one of its major strengths, pointing out that the dressing room contains more than 30 winners’ medals. That experience, he suggested, gives the group considerable authority and know-how as it prepares for another demanding season.
The Inter president also left open the possibility of further activity before the transfer window closes. Any additions, however, would be made in consultation with the manager and only if they matched the team’s needs.
“If a real need arises, we will invest again,” Marotta said.
He added that the club was continuing to monitor the opportunities available in the final stage of the transfer market, while maintaining that the current squad already possessed the qualities required to compete.
Inter’s immediate priority is therefore their opening fixture with Monza, but Marotta’s strongest message was directed at the continuing speculation surrounding Martinez. For now, the club views its captain as a key part of the team’s plans as the Serie A champions begin their defence.
