How Egypt can qualify for the FIFA U-17 world cup in Qatar

The Egypt national under-17 football team will face hosts Morocco national under-17 football team in a decisive final group-stage match at the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations, with qualification for both the knockout stages and the FIFA U-17 World Cup still within reach.

The encounter, which will be played in Morocco in front of the home supporters, represents a crucial moment for Egypt’s youth side as they seek to secure a place at the global tournament scheduled to take place in Qatar later this year.

Coached by former Zamalek SC player Hussein Abdel Latif, Egypt currently sit second in Group A with four points, level with Morocco but behind on goal difference.

Tunisia national under-17 football team and Ethiopia national under-17 football team are both tied on one point ahead of the final round of fixtures.

The tournament carries added significance because it also serves as Africa’s qualification pathway to the expanded FIFA U-17 World Cup, which will feature 48 participating nations, including 10 representatives from Africa.

Under the qualification system, the teams finishing first and second in each of the tournament’s four groups will automatically qualify for the World Cup and advance to the quarter-finals of the continental championship.

The remaining two African qualification places will be decided through play-off matches involving the teams that finish third in their respective groups.

The third-placed side in Group A will face the third-placed team from Group C, while the third-placed teams in Groups B and D will meet separately, with the winners claiming the final World Cup positions.

Egypt enter the decisive round knowing that victory over Morocco would guarantee qualification as Group A winners, ensuring direct passage to both the quarter-finals and the World Cup finals.

A draw would also be enough to send the Young Pharaohs through automatically, although they would progress as runners-up behind Morocco.

Even defeat may not necessarily end Egypt’s hopes.

If Egypt lose to Morocco and Tunisia defeat Ethiopia, Egypt would still finish second in the group due to their superior head-to-head record against Tunisia.

Similarly, a draw between Tunisia and Ethiopia alongside an Egyptian defeat would also see Egypt qualify as group runners-up.

Another scenario could involve Egypt losing 2-1 to Morocco while Ethiopia secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Tunisia. In that case, Egypt would still progress ahead of Ethiopia on goal difference after the direct meeting between the two teams ended in a goalless draw.

However, there remains a situation in which Egypt could drop into third place.

If Egypt lose by a single goal and Ethiopia defeat Tunisia by two goals, the Egyptian side would finish third in the group standings.

That outcome would force Egypt into a play-off match for another chance to reach the World Cup finals.

The multiple qualification possibilities underline the importance of the final group fixtures, with Egypt still firmly in contention to secure a return to the FIFA U-17 World Cup stage.

For Abdel Latif’s side, the clash against Morocco now represents both a test of composure and an opportunity to confirm their place among the world’s leading youth football nations.
