Hossam Hassan has agreed to most of the terms of a new contract that would keep him as Egypt’s national team coach until 2030, according to private sources.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) is expected to complete the agreement with Hassan within days, with the final signing likely to take place after EFA president Hani Abu Rida returns from a family holiday on Egypt’s North Coast.
The development marks a change in Hassan’s position on one of the most significant conditions being discussed in the proposed deal. Sources told WinWin that the Egypt coach has now accepted a clause he had previously expressed reservations about.
The clause would allow the contract to be automatically terminated if Egypt fail to reach the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Hassan’s agreement with the EFA comes after he guided Egypt through a historic 2026 World Cup campaign. The Pharaohs reached the last 16 of the tournament, achieving their first World Cup victory and progressing beyond the group stage for the first time since their debut in 1934.
Hassan accepts key contract condition
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Hassan and EFA officials have reached agreement on most of the terms of the proposed contract.
One of the outstanding issues had been a provision concerning the coach’s future if Egypt failed to achieve a specified result at the Africa Cup of Nations.
The sources said Hassan has now agreed to the inclusion of the clause, which provides for the automatic termination of the contract if Egypt do not advance to the tournament’s semi-finals.
The provision would form part of broader performance-related conditions attached to the agreement.
Under the proposed terms, the contract could also be terminated without the EFA being required to pay financial compensation if Egypt fail to qualify for the next World Cup or fail to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.
The semi-final requirement at the Africa Cup of Nations would therefore be another key benchmark for Hassan and his coaching staff.
Salary negotiations remain confidential
While most of the sporting and contractual conditions have reportedly been settled, the financial details of the agreement remain closely guarded.
The EFA has imposed a degree of secrecy around the salaries of Hassan and his twin brother Ibrahim Hassan, who serves as the national team’s manager.
However, sources said discussions between the two brothers and football association officials have shown a degree of convergence over the financial terms.
The proposed combined monthly salary for Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan is expected to be more than 4 million Egyptian pounds, according to the sources.
That would represent a significant increase on their current combined earnings with the national team.
Hossam Hassan is currently understood to receive about 1.2 million Egyptian pounds per month, while Ibrahim Hassan earns approximately 750,000 pounds.
Together, their existing monthly salary is around 2 million pounds.
The proposed new figure would therefore more than double the brothers’ current combined monthly earnings if the reported terms are ultimately confirmed.
A new contract after historic World Cup campaign
The contract negotiations follow what was described as a landmark World Cup campaign for Egypt under Hassan.
The Pharaohs reached the round of 16 at the 2026 tournament, a stage Egypt had never previously reached.
The team also recorded its first victory in World Cup history during the tournament. Its progress to the knockout stage represented another historic achievement, given that Egypt had not advanced beyond the group stage since its first appearance at the competition in 1934.
Those achievements have provided the backdrop to discussions over Hassan’s long-term future.
With the majority of the new contract terms reportedly agreed, the remaining process is expected to lead to a formal signing once Hani Abu Rida returns from his holiday.
If completed, the new agreement would keep Hossam Hassan in charge of the Egyptian national team until 2030, while placing clear performance targets on his tenure, particularly at the Africa Cup of Nations and in qualification for future major tournaments.
