Harry Kane says he is in no rush to decide his future at Bayern Munich, with discussions over a new contract expected to begin this week.
The England striker, who is preparing to start his fourth season with the German champions, said negotiations would be conducted calmly while his attention remained on Bayern Munich’s pursuit of further silverware.
“We’ll talk this week and next. We’ll just have an open discussion. We’re not in a hurry or panicking,” Kane told Marca.
“My full focus is on Bayern Munich and the upcoming season. The talks will happen behind the scenes.”
Kane’s comments came after Bayern Munich began the new campaign by beating Borussia Dortmund 2-1 to win the German Super Cup.
The victory added another honour to a highly successful period for the 32-year-old, who has won the Golden Boot, Bundesliga, German Cup and German Super Cup since joining Bayern Munich. He also scored six goals at the World Cup, helping England finish third.
Asked about his prospects of winning the Ballon d’Or, an award no Bayern Munich player has claimed for many years, Kane said his priority was to deliver more trophies rather than focus on individual recognition. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was the last Bayern Munich player to win the prize.
“A new season has started, and it is nice to begin it by winning a trophy such as the Super Cup,” said Kane. “Last season was the best of my career, that is true, but I am now focused on the new season.”
He added: “We have to fight for all the trophies again, including the Champions League. The Super Cup is the first of four trophies we will fight for, and I hope we can continue in this way.”
Kane played the entire final against Borussia Dortmund but was unable to score and did not produce the level of performance he has regularly shown for Bayern Munich.
Despite drawing a blank in the opening showpiece, he already has an impressive record for the club, with 146 goals in 148 appearances.
Bayern Munich’s success against Borussia Dortmund gave Kane another medal as he begins a fresh campaign with the club. His focus, however, is now on the wider demands of the season and the challenge of helping Bayern Munich compete for every major honour.
The striker’s current contract situation remains unresolved, but his remarks indicate that neither he nor the club feels compelled to reach an immediate agreement. Kane said both sides would hold an open discussion over the coming weeks, with the formal negotiations taking place away from the spotlight.
For now, the former Tottenham Hotspur forward is concentrating on Bayern Munich’s upcoming fixtures and their ambitions in domestic competition and the Champions League.
