Hamza Abdelkarim has made his competitive debut for Barcelona after being rewarded for an impressive pre-season, becoming the first Egyptian to play for the club in an official match.
The 19-year-old forward came on in the closing stages of Barcelona’s 5-2 La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano, replacing Raphinha. He was on the pitch when Barcelona scored their fifth goal to complete another league win.
Barcelona said Abdelkarim’s appearance was a deserved recognition of the form he showed during the club’s preparations for the new season. The Egyptian finished pre-season as the team’s leading scorer, with four goals.
His first-team debut marks a rapid rise for a player whose recent progress has been described by Barcelona as exceptional. Abdelkarim initially joined the club on loan from Egyptian side Al Ahly last season before making the move permanent this summer.
He also represented Egypt at the 2026 World Cup while he was still registered as an Under-19 player, further underlining the speed of his development.
The Barcelona forward’s appearance against Rayo Vallecano has also placed him in the club’s record books. He is the first Egyptian player to wear Barcelona’s shirt in a competitive fixture.
The achievement gives Abdelkarim a place in a small group of Egyptian players to have appeared in La Liga. Barcelona noted that he is only the third Egyptian footballer to play in the competition.
He follows Ahmed Hossam “Mido”, who became the first Egyptian to feature in La Liga when he played for Celta Vigo, and Haitham Hassan, who represented Real Oviedo during the previous season.
Abdelkarim’s opportunity came after he impressed both in friendly matches and on the training ground during Barcelona’s pre-season programme. His four goals made him the club’s most productive player in the build-up to the campaign and helped put him in contention for senior football.
Although he was introduced late in the match against Rayo Vallecano, the substitute appearance represents a significant step in his career. It also provides a first indication that his performances with the club’s younger teams and during preparations have earned the trust of the first-team set-up.
