A 24-year-old player was temporarily detained by police at half-time during a regional league match involving Hamburger SV’s third team, according to Bild.
The player, identified as Kwame-O., was representing DSC Hanseat against Hamburger SV III when officers took him into custody following an anonymous tip.
Before the intervention, Kwame-O. had scored twice in the first half as DSC Hanseat established a 4-0 lead. The home side went on to win the match 6-1.
Hamburg police spokesperson Soren Zimbal confirmed the incident to Bild, saying the player had been detained on suspicion of illegal residency. Relevant investigative procedures have since been started.
Police carried out an identity check and collected the required identification information before releasing him. They also gave him a certificate to submit to the immigration office.
Zimbal added that officers had found no international or European arrest warrant against the player.
The detention took place during the match and was described by police as temporary.
