PSG defender Achraf Hakimi produced a career-best display while Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen made seven saves to frustrate Manchester City, earning them places in the latest BBC Sport Team of the Weekend.
The selection is based on the publication’s internal player-rating system, which uses key performance metrics and advanced statistics to identify the leading performers across Europe’s major leagues.
Brighton’s historic 1-0 win at the Etihad Stadium was secured in large part by Verbruggen, who kept Manchester City’s attack at bay. The Dutch goalkeeper prevented 1.07 goals, completed a game-high 15 long passes and recorded his sixth clean sheet in nine league matches.
The result was Brighton’s first victory at the Etihad Stadium and maintained their excellent start to the season. Fabian Hurzeler’s side are third, five points from the top, while their six clean sheets are more than any other team.
Hakimi was the standout defender after scoring a hat-trick and providing two assists in PSG’s 5-1 victory at Le Havre. The Morocco international’s first treble was completed with a superb free-kick, while his six shots underlined the attacking freedom he enjoyed from right-back.
His performance earned a perfect rating of 10. PSG’s ninth consecutive victory in all competitions returned them to the top of the table and also made Luis Enrique the most successful manager in the club’s history, with 127 wins.
Ismael Baouf and Jan Paul van Hecke complete the defensive selection after both found the net for Cambuur and Tottenham respectively.
Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal continued his outstanding run of form with two goals and an assist in a 6-1 demolition of Getafe.
Sondre Orjasaeter contributed five assists for Twente, while Yannick Carrasco scored a hat-trick for Al Shabab. Strasbourg’s Gessime Yassine and Genoa’s Junior Messias also impressed enough to make the midfield.
Twente’s 9-0 win over Excelsior produced the weekend’s most prolific individual display in attack. Wout Weghorst scored four times and received a rating of 10, while Lassine Sinayoko struck twice as Paris FC beat Monaco 3-1.
Weghorst took advantage after Nesto Groen was sent off early for the hosts, scoring a first-half hat-trick for the Tukkers. His second-half penalty completed the rout and moved him level at the top of the Eredivisie scoring charts with eight goals from 11 matches.
The 34-year-old also completed 90% of his passes in the final third and created another big chance for a team-mate in a commanding performance.
