Achraf Hakimi has opted to delay discussions over a new contract with Paris Saint-Germain, despite the French champions making early moves to extend his stay following his outstanding performance against Le Havre.
The Moroccan defender has become a key figure in Luis Enrique’s plans, prompting PSG officials to explore the possibility of renewing his contract even though his current deal runs until June 2029.
Hakimi underlined his importance to the team with a remarkable display in PSG’s 5-1 victory over Le Havre. He scored three goals and provided two assists, attracting widespread attention from French and international media.
His performance also earned praise from head coach Luis Enrique, who continues to rely on the Moroccan as an important part of his team.
According to French newspaper L’Equipe, PSG have spent the past few weeks assessing Hakimi’s position and discussing the possibility of opening negotiations with the player and his representatives.
The club’s intention is to establish whether the Morocco captain is prepared to discuss an improved agreement that would keep him at the Parc des Princes for the foreseeable future.
However, Hakimi and his representatives are understood to prefer waiting before entering into formal negotiations. They believe there is no immediate need to reach an agreement because his existing contract still has several years to run.
The report makes clear that the defender’s position should not be interpreted as a rejection of PSG or a desire to leave the club. Instead, he is understood to favour postponing discussions until a later date, when extending his contract becomes a more pressing matter for both sides.
Hakimi joined PSG from Inter Milan in the summer of 2022. He subsequently signed a new agreement in February 2025, which also included improved financial terms.
Since arriving in Paris, the Moroccan has established himself as one of the team’s most important players, contributing in both defensive and attacking areas.
Luis Enrique keen to retain Hakimi
Hakimi’s importance to PSG is reflected in the confidence placed in him by Luis Enrique. The Spanish coach values his ability to operate as a conventional right-back while also moving forward to support attacks and create scoring opportunities.
His contribution is not limited to attacking play, as he remains responsible for his defensive duties and has developed an influential role within the squad.
The club’s early approach over a possible contract extension is also linked to its desire to maintain stability in the team. Hakimi is the club’s vice-captain, behind Brazilian defender Marquinhos, and brings considerable experience from domestic and European football.
He also remains an important figure for Morocco, where he captains the national team.
For now, PSG will have to wait before learning whether Hakimi is ready to commit his future to the club beyond his current agreement. His decision to
