Haashim Pead will make his Stormers debut from the bench against the Sharks in their United Rugby Championship derby at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, 10 October.
The highly rated scrumhalf is among the backline replacements for the match, which kicks off at 16:00, according to the URC website. His inclusion has added interest beyond the fixture itself, with the 21-year-old viewed as a potential future candidate for the Springboks.
Stormers Rugby confirmed Pead’s place in the match-day squad as the Cape Town side look to respond to last Friday’s 13-17 defeat by Edinburgh.
The Sharks arrive in stronger form and lead the URC table after beating defending champions Leinster 26-20 last Saturday. Stormers head coach John Dobson is anticipating a demanding contest, with seven Springboks named in the starting XV.
Pead joined the Stormers in September on a four-year contract after a complicated transfer saga involving the Lions. He has represented South Africa at junior level and has made one appearance for the Springboks A team.
His progress has already attracted attention. The Star previously published an assessment of the young scrumhalf from former scrumhalf Rudy Paige, adding to the growing interest surrounding Pead’s development.
Springboks opportunity may take time
Pead’s debut comes while South Africa’s scrumhalf options remain well established. According to South Africa Rugby, head coach Rassie Erasmus selected a 46-man squad for the Nations Championship in June, with four scrumhalves included: Embrose Papier, Herschel Jantjies, Cobus Reinach and Grant Williams.
Although some supporters would like to see Pead in the green and gold, an immediate call-up appears unlikely. Erasmus has preferred Reinach and Williams at number nine, while Papier and Jantjies have also been given opportunities.
With the 2027 Rugby World Cup approaching, Erasmus is unlikely to make major changes to his squad at this stage. That makes Pead’s Stormers season important as an opportunity to establish himself at professional level rather than an immediate route into the national team.
A strong campaign could nevertheless provide the foundation for a future Springboks selection. For now, his first task is to make an impression when he is called upon against a Sharks side leading the competition.
The Cape Town derby will therefore mark both Pead’s first appearance for the Stormers and the beginning of what could become a longer-term challenge for a place among the world champions.
