Erling Haaland says Manchester City must “stick together” and remain positive as they prepare to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday after a difficult period for the club and its supporters.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the striker said the squad had reunited following a lengthy international break and now needed to focus on returning to winning ways.
“It feels good to be back, together as a team again, and back at the club,” said Haaland. “We also need to start winning games again.”
Manchester City have several new players in the squad, while the arrival of a new coach has brought further changes. Haaland acknowledged that some of the new signings would need time to settle, although the demands of football meant immediate performances were expected.
“We have to help one another and, ultimately, keep trying to winwin and win again,” he said.
Haaland also acknowledged the contrast between the current approach and the methods of former manager Guardiola, who had led the club for 10 years. He said he missed Guardiola’s leadership and presence but believed change could be beneficial.
“Maresca is here, and he has his own ideas,” said Haaland. “But we still want to control possession and play good football. So, even if some things are different, what we want to do remains the same.”
The Norway international said his connection with Manchester City extended beyond his career. He and his father signed for the club on the same day, June 13th, while Haaland also has family ties to England. His mother and her family lived in the country for ten years.
“I care deeply about it,” he said. “I also have a strong affection for England as a whole. I care about Man City, and I must say that I care about the fans here because I am also a fan and can understand their feelings.”
Haaland described the visit to Anfield as a significant occasion, recalling the rivalry between Guardiola and Liverpool’s former manager Klopp. He said he had watched their teams compete while playing for Molde, Red Bull Salzburg and Dortmund.
“Playing there is always special,” he said. “I’ve won there, drawn there, and lost there. Every Premier League game is different, and every game against Liverpool is special.”
The striker urged the travelling supporters to stay behind the team regardless of the result.
“We must stick together, be there for one another, and stay positive,” he said. “No matter what happens in life, we must keep smiling.”
Haaland added: “We have to stick together and spread love to one another. So, stick together, enjoy the journey, and keep smiling.”
