Sweden strengthened their bid to return to the top tier of the Nations League with a 1-0 victory over Romania on Monday, Viktor Gyokeres scoring the only goal at Arena Nationala.
The result leaves Graham Potter’s side unbeaten after four matches in Group B4. Sweden lead the section on 10 points, two clear of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and are now close to securing promotion to the competition’s top section.
Gyokeres settled the match after only 12 minutes. Sebastian Nanasi’s effort hit the woodwork, but the rebound fell to the Arsenal forward, who reacted quickly to give Sweden the lead.
He had an opportunity to add a second before half-time when he connected with Eric Smith’s cross. However, Gyokeres was unable to direct his header towards goal.
Romania had more of an opportunity to respond after the interval, but Sweden goalkeeper Viktor Johansson kept out efforts from Nicolae Stanciu and Florin Tanase. Those chances were as close as Romania came to finding an equaliser.
Sweden on the verge of promotion
Three wins and a draw from their opening four fixtures represents an excellent start for Sweden, who are now on the brink of returning to the Nations League’s top tier.
The squad contains considerable quality, although Gyokeres was the only major star name involved for Potter’s side in this match. In the absence of Alexander Isak, the striker again carried much of Sweden’s attacking responsibility.
Gyokeres has now scored 25 goals for Sweden and was their most active attacking player in Bucharest, attempting four shots. Only one was on target, but it was the chance that mattered as he followed up Nanasi’s effort to score.
The opportunity that produced the goal was valued at 0.95 expected goals, making it a particularly clear opening. Gyokeres still needed to be alert to capitalise on the rebound, and he ensured Sweden took full advantage.
With Isak unavailable, Gyokeres remains Sweden’s principal attacking threat. Once again, he delivered the decisive contribution as his side moved closer to promotion.
