Guirassy takes another step towards African Champions League greatness

Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy has strengthened his place among Africa’s leading goalscorers in the UEFA Champions League after scoring twice in Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 away victory over Sabah Baku.

The forward’s latest goals took his tally in the competition to 23, moving him into the top five African scorers in Champions League history and closer to Senegal international Sadio Mané, who occupies fourth place with 27 goals.

Guirassy opened the scoring in the 10th minute before finding the net again in the 53rd minute, giving the German side a valuable victory on the road.

The double strike marks another milestone in the career of the Guinea international, whose performances in European football continue to raise his profile among the continent’s most prolific forwards.

With 23 Champions League goals to his name, Guirassy has joined a distinguished group of African players who have made a lasting impact on Europe’s premier club competition.

His achievement places him alongside some of the continent’s most celebrated attacking talents.

Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah leads the all-time African scoring chart with 50 goals. Former Ivory Coast international Didier Drogba follows with 44, while Cameroon legend Samuel Eto’o is third with 30.

Mané, the Senegalese forward, sits fourth on 27 goals, four ahead of Guirassy, who has now established himself among the competition’s five leading African marksmen.

The figures underline the contribution African footballers have made to the Champions League over the years, with players from Guinea, Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast and Cameroon represented among the leading scorers.

For Guinea, Guirassy’s achievement is another significant moment, placing the country’s leading striker in the company of players whose performances have helped shape the history of African involvement in European club football.

The Dortmund forward’s ability to score in important matches has been central to his growing reputation.

His brace against Sabah Baku not only helped his team secure victory but also strengthened his position in a prestigious individual ranking.

At 23 goals, Guirassy remains four behind Mané and seven short of Eto’o’s total.

Closing those gaps will require further goals in the competition, but his latest performance has brought the Senegalese forward’s position within reach.

Salah and Drogba remain further ahead, with 50 and 44 goals respectively, setting a higher benchmark for the Guinean striker as he continues his European career.

Guirassy’s immediate focus will be on maintaining his scoring form for Borussia Dortmund, while his progress in the Champions League provides an additional measure of his achievements on the continental stage.

Dortmund are also due to face Eintracht Frankfurt in their seventh Bundesliga match, offering the striker another opportunity to contribute to his club’s campaign.
