Guinea national football team staged a dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Togo in an international friendly played in Morocco.
The match, held at the Stade Moulay-Al Hassan, marked Guinea’s return to action in 2026. However, their comeback fixture nearly turned into a difficult outing as Togo took control for large parts of the game.
Under new head coach Patrice Neveu, Togo delivered a disciplined performance and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 26th minute. Kevin Denkey converted from the penalty spot to give the Eperviers an early advantage.
Guinea struggled to find rhythm and were largely second best for much of the contest. Their difficulties were compounded late in the match when Togo were awarded a second penalty. Idjessi Metsoko stepped up in the 83rd minute and calmly converted to double the lead, putting Togo in a commanding position.
At 2-0 down and with time running out, Guinea appeared headed for defeat. But the Syli National responded with urgency in the closing stages, producing a remarkable turnaround.
Debutant Mamady Cissé sparked the comeback in the 86th minute, finding the net to reduce the deficit and give his side renewed belief.
Just four minutes later, Serhou Guirassy completed the fightback with a well-taken header in the 90th minute, ensuring Guinea salvaged a draw from a difficult position.
The late goals transformed the outcome of a match that had been dominated by Togo for long spells. Guinea’s resilience in the final minutes prevented what would have been a disappointing defeat in their return fixture.
For Togo, the result may feel like a missed opportunity after holding a two-goal advantage deep into the match. However, their overall performance, particularly in controlling the game and creating chances, will offer encouragement under their new coach.
Guinea, meanwhile, will take confidence from their late response, even if questions remain about their overall display.
They will now turn their attention to their next friendly, where they are set to face Benin national football team on Tuesday.
