Italy’s National Olympic Committee (CONI) is to examine whether a commissioner should be appointed to oversee the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), a move that could lead to Giovanni Malago being suspended from the presidency, according to Corriere della Sera.
If the proposal is approved, FIGC would be placed under temporary leadership while the person previously chosen as president was removed from the role.
The review centres on questions over Malago’s eligibility to serve as FIGC president. One issue is whether he was registered with the federation when he was nominated. Another concerns the principle restricting people from moving directly from public office into senior positions at organisations linked to the state.
The case has emerged despite Italy’s anti-corruption authority previously issuing a ruling in Malago’s favour.
