Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi provided an early assist as Coventry City overcame Plymouth Argyle 4-2 to book their place in the next round of the EFL Cup.
Yirenkyi started Tuesday night’s Round of 64 tie and made an immediate contribution, setting up Taiwo Awoniyi for Coventry’s opening goal after just three minutes.
The Ghanaian midfielder’s early involvement helped Coventry establish control of the match, with the hosts adding a second goal only two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead inside the opening five minutes.
Awoniyi converted Yirenkyi’s delivery in the third minute to give Coventry the advantage before Jack Rudoni extended the lead.
Plymouth were initially unable to cope with Coventry’s rapid start, but the visitors gradually worked their way back into the contest.
Oliver Irow reduced the deficit in the 21st minute, giving Plymouth a route back into the tie. Coventry retained their narrow advantage until half-time, but Plymouth returned after the break determined to complete the comeback.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 54th minute when Xavier Amaechi scored the equaliser to make the score 2-2.
The goal shifted the momentum towards Plymouth and left the tie finely balanced. Coventry, however, responded strongly and restored their lead in the 67th minute through Ephron Mason-Clark.
Plymouth were then forced to chase the game once more as they looked for another equaliser.
Instead, Coventry put the result beyond doubt late in the match. Victor Torp converted a penalty in the 78th minute to give the home side a 4-2 advantage.
That goal effectively settled the contest and ensured Coventry progressed to the next stage of the competition.
For Yirenkyi, the match was another opportunity to make his presence felt after starting the cup tie. His assist for Awoniyi’s goal was particularly significant because it gave Coventry the perfect start and helped establish the early advantage from which they were able to build.
The Ghanaian’s contribution came in a match that produced an entertaining contest, with Coventry taking an early two-goal lead before Plymouth fought back to level the score.
Plymouth’s response meant Coventry had to recover their composure after surrendering the advantage. The home side eventually regained control through Mason-Clark before Torp’s late penalty completed the scoring.
The result means Coventry advance to the next round of the EFL Cup, while Plymouth’s involvement in the competition comes to an end.
Coventry’s ability to withstand Plymouth’s comeback and respond with two further goals will provide encouragement as they continue their campaign.
Yirenkyi’s early assist was central to that victory. The Ghana international helped Coventry get off to a flying start, with his pass allowing Awoniyi to open the scoring after only three minutes.
The rapid opening also set the tone for a match in which Coventry scored twice inside the first five minutes, although Plymouth’s second-half equaliser ensured the hosts could not coast to victory.
After Amaechi brought Plymouth level, Coventry showed enough attacking quality to regain their lead and then secure the result from the penalty spot.
Torp’s 78th-minute strike gave Coventry a two-goal cushion once again and removed the immediate threat of another Plymouth comeback.
The 4-2 victory therefore sends Coventry into the next round, with Yirenkyi having played a direct role in the result through his assist for the opening goal.
