Ghana moved to within reach of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals after Evelyn Badu scored in first-half stoppage time to give the Black Queens a 1-0 lead against Mali.
Victory was essential for both sides, with Ghana and Mali aware that a positive result would be crucial to their hopes of progressing from the competition. For much of the opening period, however, neither team was able to impose itself as the match began cautiously.
The tempo gradually increased as Ghana grew into the contest. The Black Queens began to take greater control of possession and territory, forcing Mali to spend longer periods defending rather than building attacks of their own.
Ghana created the first notable threat in the 11th minute when Asantewaa tested the Mali defence. The move provided an early warning, but the Aigles Dames dealt with the danger and prevented Ghana from turning the opportunity into an opening goal.
Both teams continued to look for a way through as the half developed. Mali remained committed to the contest, while Ghana’s increasing pressure suggested that the balance of the game was beginning to shift. Despite those efforts, the deadlock appeared likely to remain intact until the interval.
Ghana then produced the decisive moment in added time at the end of the first half. Badu found space after escaping the attention of the Mali defence before beating the Aigles goalkeeper to put the Black Queens ahead.
The goal gave Ghana a narrow advantage at the break and left Mali facing the task of overturning the deficit after half-time. Although the lead came late, it placed Ghana in a strong position in the match and brought the Black Queens a step closer to the quarter-finals.
Mali must now respond in the second half if they are to keep their hopes alive. The Aigles Dames will need to find an equaliser after conceding at the worst possible moment, while Ghana will attempt to protect its advantage and complete what would be a valuable victory.
The Black Queens had initially struggled to find their rhythm, but their gradual improvement was rewarded just before the interval. With the score at 1-0, Ghana holds the advantage in a game in which both teams started knowing that defeat would be a serious setback.
