Ghana Police launch manhunt for killers of Berekum Chelsea player

Ghana Police Service have launched a manhunt for armed robbers following a deadly highway attack that claimed the life of Berekum Chelsea player Dominic Frimpong.

The incident occurred on Sunday night along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso (KDS) road in the Nyinahin District, according to an official statement from the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

Police say a bus carrying about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea was ambushed by six armed men at around 10:30 pm. In an attempt to escape the attack, the vehicle reportedly veered off the road and crashed into a bush.

During the robbery, Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital, where he later passed away while receiving treatment. His death has sent shockwaves across the Ghanaian football community, coming just hours after the team had been returning from a league fixture.

Police confirmed that another victim, identified as 52-year-old George Owusu Afriyie, was also robbed during the incident, losing a sum of GHS 4,500. Spent cartridges were recovered from the scene as part of ongoing investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has since deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area, intensifying efforts to track down the suspects. Authorities have assured the public that the perpetrators will be apprehended as soon as possible.

“The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the statement noted, while urging calm as investigations continue.

The tragic development follows earlier condolences from the Ghana Football Association, who described Frimpong’s death as a huge loss to both his club and Ghana football. The association has also pledged to review travel security arrangements for clubs participating in domestic competitions.

As the manhunt continues, calls are growing for improved safety measures for teams traveling across the country, with Frimpong’s death highlighting the risks faced by players and officials on domestic assignments.
